Huawei MA5800-X7 OLT Overview

The MA5800-X7 belongs to the Huawei MA5800 series optical line terminal (OLT),  and the MA5800 supports four types of subracks. The only difference between these subracks relies on the service slot quantity (they have the same functions and network positions). and the MA5800 series includes:

  • MA5800-X2, which supports 2 service slots with a small capacity.
  • MA5800-X7, which supports 7 service slots with medium capacity.
  • MA5800-X15, which supports 15 service slots with large capacity.
  • MA5800-X17, which supports 17 service slots with large capacity.
  • If the space of your cabinet is only 1U, and the number of ONTs/ONUs to be connected does not exceed 1024, you can also choose MA5801-GP08-H3.

Note: MA5800-X17 is compatible with ETSI standard cabinet, and the other three can be used in IEC standard cabinet.

The MA5800 is the industry’s first smart aggregation OLT with distributed architecture. It is positioned as the next-generation OLT for NG-PON(GPON/EPON/XG-PON/XGS-PON). The product is designed to help carriers build networks with larger bandwidths, higher speeds, and smarter connectivity to deliver a better service experience.

  • Providing GPON, 10G PON (including XG-PON and XGS-PON), and P2P 10GE/GE access, the MA5800 supports deployment on FTTH, FTTD, FTTB, and FTTC networks. This makes it applicable to home access, enterprise access, mobile backhaul, and Wi-Fi hotspot backhaul scenarios to aggregate all services on one fiber network.
  • The MA5800 functions as a large-capacity aggregation device on the network to aggregate the traffic from ONTs, MDUs, and campus switches, thereby simplifying the network architecture and reducing the OPEX.

Providing GPON, 10G GPON(including XG-PON and XGS-PON), P2P, GE, and 10GE access, the MA5800 supports deployment on FTTH, FTTD, FTTB, FTTC, and distributed converged cable access platform (D-CCAP)networks. This makes it applicable to home access, enterprise access, mobile backhaul, and Wi-Fi hotspot backhaul scenarios to aggregate all services on one fiber network.

The MA5800 functions as a large-cap aggregation device on the network to aggregate the traffic from ONTs, MDUs, and campus switches, thereby simplifying the network architecture and reducing the OPEX.

Q: Which services can be provided by MA5800 series OLT, like MA5800-X7?
A: For operators/ISP companies, the MA5800 series OLT can provide superior 4K/8K/VR video services, gigabit broadband services, CATV/IPTV, support massive physical connections for smart homes and all-optical campuses, and offers a unified way to connect home user, enterprise user, and Internet of Things (IoT) services.

Q: How can I use an MA5800 OLT to deploy XG(S)-PON network?

A: Please refer to the article: Huawei XG(S)-PON FTTH Solution.

Q: Can the same PON port of the 10GEPON board XSHF of the MA5800 be plugged with ONUs with symmetrical and asymmetrical bandwidths? How to identify them?
A: The 10GEPON board XSHF of MA5800 can support mixed access of ONU (10g/10g) with symmetric bandwidth and ONU (10g/2.5g) with asymmetric bandwidth under the same PON port.
Allocate bandwidth after automatic identification by the OLT according to the registration message
The ONT/ONU type can be manually modified through the ont-type command.

Q: Are the Default User Name and Password of the MA5800-X7 the Same as those of the MA5600T series OLT?

A: According to the latest password security policy, the default user name and password of the MA5800 are root and admin123. The default user name and password of the MA5600T are changed from root and admin to root and admin123 from V800R017C00. To enhance security, you are advised to change the password upon your first login.

Q: What can I do if I forget the password to the MA5800 account?

A: Method 1: If you remember the read and write community names of the device, use an SNMP tool (for example, net-snmp) to deliver a command to change the password of the root user. For example, change the password of the root user to admin123.

snmpset -c community name -v2c device IP address .1.3.6.1.4.1.2011.6.3.10.1.1.2.114.111.111.116 x “01 92 02 3a 7b bd 73 25 05 16 f0 69 df 18 b5 00”

Method 2: If you remember the BIOS password, enter the BIOS interface and load the blank database of the corresponding version or the database version whose root password is available.

Q: What is the IP address of the maintenance network port on the MA5800?

A: The default IP address of the maintenance Ethernet port (ETH port on the control board) of the MA5800 is 10.11.104.2.

Q: Why does a newly deployed MA5800 fail to be logged in through Telnet?

A: By default, the Telnet protocol is disabled. You can run the sysman service telnet enable command to enable the Telnet service if needed. (NOTE: Telnet has security risks due to protocol limitations. You are advised to use Stelnet.)

Q: Can users adjust the transmit optical power of the MA5800 optical module?

A: The transmit optical power of an optical module is commissioned before delivery. The device cannot control the transmitted optical power of an optical module using commands.

Q: Does the MA5800 support active/standby mode?

A: The MA5800 does not support active/standby mode, but only load-sharing mode. The MA5800 has a distributed architecture. When two control boards are configured, the active and standby control boards carry services at the same time to effectively utilize the bandwidth of two control boards.

Each control board consists of the control module and the switching module.

  • The control modules of two control boards always work in active/standby mode. If the control module of a control board is in the active state, this board is an active control board; if the control module of a control board is in the standby state, this board is a standby control board. When abnormalities such as faults or reset occur in the control module of the active control board, services on the active control board are automatically switched over to the control module of the standby control board, to ensure that the functions of control boards and relevant services are not interrupted.
  • The switching modules of two control boards always work in load-sharing mode, and the maximum switching bandwidth of the system is the maximum switching capacity of two control boards. When one control board is removed, or the switching module of one control board is faulty, traffic of the faulty control board is automatically switched over to the other control board. The maximum switching bandwidth of the system is the maximum switching capacity of one control board.

The MA5800 does not support active/standby mode, so it does not support:

  • The protection between the active and standby control boards.
  • The protection between the ports on the active and standby control boards.
  • The protection between the aggregation groups on the active and standby control boards.

Q: Can the boards on the MA5600T be used on the MA5800?

A: The MA5800 has a brand-new hardware structure, so the boards on the MA5600T can not be used.

Q: Can the 10G PON board work with the PON ONU?

A: 10G GPON board can not work with the GPON ONU. Therefore, the services of the GPON ONU cannot be migrated to the 10G GPON port.

Q: How to switch 10GE upstream transmission to GE upstream transmission of the upstream port on the MA5800?

A: On the MA5800, both the control board and the upstream board can be used for 10GE/GE upstream transmission. By default, the device uses 10GE for upstream transmission. You can set the upstream port by running speed command. To avoid communication failures, the rate of the upstream port must be the same as that of the port on the interconnected device.

Q: Can the power distribution box on the live network be installed on the MA5800 that is placed in the cabinet housing the MA5600T?

A: Can not be completely matched. The power consumption is limited. When both MA5600T and MA5800 are installed in the same cabinet, service boards are configured according to the remaining power supply of the entire cabinet.

Q: How to handle the issue if the upgrade progress of an MA5800 is consistently 99%?

A: During the upgrade, run the display progress load command to query the package file loading progress. The progress stays at 99% for a period of time. Please wait patiently.

Q: What are the differences between options always-on and once-on in the password authentication of an ONU?

A:

always-on: If this option is selected, an ONU is authenticated in the password mode before it goes online each time, and the MAC address/SN parameter is not required in ONU registration. After the ONU is authenticated, you can modify its SN or MAC address.

once-on: If this option is selected, an ONU is authenticated in the password mode within a specified period before it goes online for the first time. After successful authentication, the ONU is bound to the MAC address/SN. Thus, the ONU is authenticated by MAC address/SN but not by password next time it goes online. After the ONU is authenticated, you cannot modify its SN or MAC address

Q: Is there any MA5800 model that only has 1U height?

A: If you need 1U box-shaped Huawei OLT, you can choose MA5801-GP16-H2, MA5801-GP08-H3, MA5801-FL16-H1, MA5801-GP16, MA5801-GP08-H2.

I purchased 3 sets of MA5800-X7 OLT from Telecomate.com. They recommend I use air transport to save on my shipping cost, which is nice. I got my packages yesterday, and the test report shows the devices are usable, also the equipment is totally new and original from Huawei.
