During technical support, we often hear from customers about issues such as forgetting the administrator password, updating default credentials during initial deployment, or performing regular password rotations to meet internal security policies.
This article explains how to change local user passwords on Huawei S series switches (excluding the S1700 models). Regular password updates are essential to maintaining network security and preventing unauthorized access.
On S series switches, there are two methods available for changing local user passwords:
- Administrator changes another user’s password
- Administrators can directly change the passwords of other local users.
- A local user can also modify attributes (such as password, level, maximum access number, and validity period) for users with lower levels.
- For example, to change the password of local user admin to huawei@123, enter AAA mode and configure the new password.
2. User changes their own password
- A lower-level administrator can change their own password after successful authentication by using the local-user change-password command.
- The system will prompt for the old password, then the new password, and finally confirmation of the new password.
- Passwords must be 8–128 characters in length and should include at least two character types: lowercase letters, uppercase letters, numbers, and special characters.

Notes:
- Only users who pass local authentication can change their own passwords.
- The local-user change-password command only updates the password but does not save the configuration. To make the change permanent, the configuration must be saved.
- If the old, new, or confirmation password is not entered within 30 seconds, the operation is canceled automatically. The operation can also be canceled manually by pressing Ctrl+C.
