What is PPPoE?
PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet) is a point-to-point protocol that runs on Ethernet. It allows point-to-point connections to be established over Ethernet connections in a wide area network (WAN) or a local area network (LAN). PPPoE is designed to encapsulate the traditional point-to-point protocol (PPP) in an Ethernet framework, thereby taking advantage of the widespread use and low cost of Ethernet to provide users with additional features such as authentication, encryption, and compression.
Specifically, PPPoE allows Internet service providers (ISPs) to provide broadband access services to users through DSL modems, cable modems, or other access technologies. In a PPPoE connection, the user-end device (such as a computer or router) authenticates and obtains an IP address by establishing a PPPoE session on Ethernet, and then accesses the Internet through the connection. PPPoE also supports a multi-user environment in the network, allowing ISPs to effectively manage and control the access of multiple users.
In short, PPPoE has become a common connection method in the field of broadband access by combining the flexibility of the PPP protocol with the efficiency of Ethernet, especially for scenarios that require user authentication and connection management.

NE40 chassis include NE40E-X3, NE40E-X3A, NE40E-X8, NE40E-X8A, NE40E-X16, NE40E-X16A. The chassis with the letter A suffix are more advanced than those without the letter A. The most popular ones are NE40E-X8 and NE40E-X8A, because the number 8 represents 8 service slots available, which is the most suitable for most ISPs.
PPPoE license function.
Generally speaking, if ISP needs to use PPPoE function, they will first choose ME60, because ME60 comes with PPPoE. So if we use NE40E series routers, how can we get PPPoE?
NE40E needs to implement PPPoE function, which requires the whole machine function license—user quantity license—interface card license (child and mother cards only need mother card license, integrated cards need whole card license; single board with E at the end supports PPPoE License)
To implement PPPoE function, you must first have NetEngine40E&80E PPPoE/IPoE function license (Code: 81400370). With this function license, you can control the whole machine PPPoE/IPoE function of NE40E, support PPPoE user access, IPoE access.
In addition, we also need to equip NetEngine40E&80E 1k user license (Code: 82400206). This license is used to control the number of BAS access users. One license is required for every 1,000 activated users. The number of IPoE users is not controlled by this license, only the number of PPPoE users is controlled. The number of authorized users in the license represents the upper limit of the number of users that the software allows to access the entire machine. The actual number of users that can go online (including IPoE users and PPPoE users) is also limited by the available memory size of the main control board. The specifications are as follows: IPv4: 1024K (16G/32G memory) IPv4: 512K (8G memory) IPv4: 128K (4G memory) IPv6: 512K (16G/32G memory) IPv6: 256K (8G memory) IPv6: 128K (4G memory) Dual-stack users: 512K (16G/32G memory) Dual-stack users: 256K (8G memory) Dual-stack users: 96K (4G memory). Only with a license equal to the number of users can AAA and user management (access users), IPv4 address management, IPv6 address management, IPoE access, PPPoE user access, 802.1X access, L2TP access, VXLAN tunnel access, and user access multi-machine backup be supported.
Finally, our interface cards also need license activation. If the interface card is an integrated card (LPUI), the authorization of the entire card is required; if it is a mother-child card (LPUF), only the mother card needs to be activated, and the child card does not require a license. PPPoE License-User. Of course, some interface boards have “-E” at the end, such as LPUF-480-E, which support PPPoE function by themselves, so a separate license is no longer required.
In summary, if NE40E wants to implement the PPPoE function, first of all, a license must be used to activate the function of the entire machine; secondly, the corresponding user license must be activated according to the number of subscribers, and finally, the card that forms a PPPoE physical short circuit with the upper and lower ends also needs to support PPPoE. If it does not support it, a license activation is required.
