PON (Passive Optical Network) is a passive optical network with a point-to-multipoint (P2MP) structure. Mainstream PON technologies include BPON (Broadband Passive Optical Network), EPON (Ethernet Passive Optical Network) and GPON.
Development of PON Technology
APON: ATM-based passive optical network.
GPON: Gigabit Capable Passive Optical Network Gigabit passive optical network.
EPON: Ethernet Passive Optical Networks Ethernet-based passive optical network.
GPON: Upstream and downstream are asymmetric, with 2.5Gbps for downstream and 1.25Gbps for upstream.
EPON: Upstream and downstream are symmetric, with 1.25Gbps for both upstream and downstream.
GPON has developed two standards, 10G GPON symmetric and asymmetric. In the future, GPON will evolve to 40-80G TWDM PON network, which couples different wavelengths to the first-floor optical fiber for transmission through WDM technology. One wavelength can transmit 10Gbps, so four wavelengths can transmit 40Gbps, and eight wavelengths can transmit 80Gbps.
Application of PON Network Technology
The PON network is connected to the fiber-optic broadband of every household. Let’s go through the optical fiber and take a look at the devices that the PON network consists of.
Based on the distance from the user, the PON network is mainly composed of three parts.
1. OLT
OLT (Optical Line Terminal): Farthest from the user, OLT equipment is the core equipment of PON, generally installed and deployed in the operator’s computer room, used to aggregate user data and send it to the metropolitan area network for transmission.
2. ODN
ODN (Optical Distribution Network): Provides “transmission channels” for ONU and OLT through optical fiber and splitter. The splitter can divide one optical signal into multiple channels in a certain proportion.
3. ONU
ONU (Optical Network Unit): Closest to the user, ONU equipment is generally installed and deployed directly in the user’s home. Common types include SFU (Single-family Unit) and HGU (Home Gateway Unit). One end of the ONU is connected to the splitter through optical fiber, and the other port is connected to the terminal device at home through wired or wireless means.
